Geraldine
Geraldine shook her head. What Bridget had said implied that she was physically fine but not mentally, and that her memory lapses were imagined rather than real.
That was absurd.
âThere must be another explanation. It wasnât easy for me to raise a child while living in constant fear that I would forget to feed her or pick her up from school. Why would I convince myself of something that wasnât real if it was causing me so much trouble?â
Bridget lifted her hands. âThatâs a question that should be addressed to Vanessa.â
âCan those issues result from frequent thralling?â Shai asked. âI know that our bodies donât heal mental problems, and we know that excessive thralling can cause irreversible damage.â
âIn humans.â Bridget leaned back in her chair. âAlthough, to be fair, I donât know what effect it would have on an immortal. Only a god or a goddess can thrall other immortals, and since Annani has never abused her ability, we donât have experience with that.â
Shai shook his head. âWe also thought that only gods and goddesses could compel other immortals, but we know now thatâs not true. Navuh and Kalugal can do that. What if the immortal who induced Geraldineâs transition continued to thrall her after her accident?â
Geraldineâs head snapped to Shai. âAre you suggesting that the immortal who induced me had something to do with my accident and then continued thralling me after I recovered? That sounds absurd.â
âI agree that itâs far-fetched, but itâs possible.â He smoothed his hand over the back of his neck. âI thought of this scenario last night. What if he wanted to get you away from your husband and daughter? What if he was in love with you, but you refused to leave your family? He might have decided to erase them from your memory and stage your drowning accident so they wouldnât look for you. He could have been inexperienced or overzealous and caused irreparable damage.â
âThatâs an even less likely scenario than the boating accident,â Bridget said. âBut if a powerful immortal is responsible for your memory problems, Annani might be able to look into your head and find out whether youâve been thralled too many times.â
As the phantom pain of her head injury started throbbing, Geraldineâs hand flew to her temple. âI was injured. Iâm sure of that, and Iâm terrified of anyone messing up my brain even more than it is now. I allowed Kalugal to compel me because I had no choice. But Iâm not sure about the goddess getting inside my brain. She is much more powerful than Kalugal.â
âAnnani wonât hurt you.â Shai took her hand and clasped it between his two. âSheâs very conscientious about using her abilities on immortals. If she encounters resistance, she wonât push. She would pull back.â
âAre you sure?â
âIâm certain. We will also explain the situation to her so she would know to be extra careful.â
Geraldineâs head was throbbing so badly that she could barely concentrate. Perhaps Bridget had been right, and it was all in her head, but not physically.
