Geraldine

Geraldine shook her head. What Bridget had said implied that she was physically fine but not mentally, and that her memory lapses were imagined rather than real.

That was absurd.

“There must be another explanation. It wasn’t easy for me to raise a child while living in constant fear that I would forget to feed her or pick her up from school. Why would I convince myself of something that wasn’t real if it was causing me so much trouble?”

Bridget lifted her hands. “That’s a question that should be addressed to Vanessa.”

“Can those issues result from frequent thralling?” Shai asked. “I know that our bodies don’t heal mental problems, and we know that excessive thralling can cause irreversible damage.”

“In humans.” Bridget leaned back in her chair. “Although, to be fair, I don’t know what effect it would have on an immortal. Only a god or a goddess can thrall other immortals, and since Annani has never abused her ability, we don’t have experience with that.”

Shai shook his head. “We also thought that only gods and goddesses could compel other immortals, but we know now that’s not true. Navuh and Kalugal can do that. What if the immortal who induced Geraldine’s transition continued to thrall her after her accident?”

Geraldine’s head snapped to Shai. “Are you suggesting that the immortal who induced me had something to do with my accident and then continued thralling me after I recovered? That sounds absurd.”

“I agree that it’s far-fetched, but it’s possible.” He smoothed his hand over the back of his neck. “I thought of this scenario last night. What if he wanted to get you away from your husband and daughter? What if he was in love with you, but you refused to leave your family? He might have decided to erase them from your memory and stage your drowning accident so they wouldn’t look for you. He could have been inexperienced or overzealous and caused irreparable damage.”

“That’s an even less likely scenario than the boating accident,” Bridget said. “But if a powerful immortal is responsible for your memory problems, Annani might be able to look into your head and find out whether you’ve been thralled too many times.”

As the phantom pain of her head injury started throbbing, Geraldine’s hand flew to her temple. “I was injured. I’m sure of that, and I’m terrified of anyone messing up my brain even more than it is now. I allowed Kalugal to compel me because I had no choice. But I’m not sure about the goddess getting inside my brain. She is much more powerful than Kalugal.”

“Annani won’t hurt you.” Shai took her hand and clasped it between his two. “She’s very conscientious about using her abilities on immortals. If she encounters resistance, she won’t push. She would pull back.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m certain. We will also explain the situation to her so she would know to be extra careful.”

Geraldine’s head was throbbing so badly that she could barely concentrate. Perhaps Bridget had been right, and it was all in her head, but not physically.
